This offering has been borne out of my experience of chronic back and hip pain over the past years and my experiments to alleviate it. I have focused much of my own practice on balancing a deep abdominal muscle called the psoas (or the iliopsoas muscle complex). I believe that due to our increasingly sedentary lives, many of us experience a chronically tight psoas with related structural imbalances and can benefit greatly from exploring this primary core muscle.

These imbalances can lead to, among other things, symptoms such as groin, lower or mid back pain, sacroiliac discomfort or sciatica, one sided tension or pain in the lower or mid back.

The psoas is also a very important consideration during pregnancy, and can be associated with discomforts such as tightness in breath, upset stomachs, constipation, tight psoas keep the baby high and effects fetal engagement and descent.

Much of this work has been informed by my study of Donna Farhi & Leila Stuart’s Pathways to a Centred Body, as well as ongoing study with Lisa Peterson, alongside my own recovery from chronic pain.

Over these 6 sessions

we will work to develop a felt sense of the psoas via experiential anatomy.

We will use gentle techniques to soften the psoas and learn to release and lengthen it in collaboration with full diaphragmatic breathing.

We'll also explore imbalance between the left and right side of the body before learning to consciously activate the psoas and strengthen it.

We'll learn how to move from the psoas and how to integrate all our explorations to enhance your posture and alignment in everyday movement.

I believe the psoas has a profound influence on how we move and inhabit our bodies, and by giving this muscle complex more attention you can improve your core strength and stability and bring more ease into all you do.

  • Janet is a brilliant teacher. As a yoga beginner, I was nervous about what to expect. I've had private lessons with her and also been to a class. She adapted the private lessons to my needs and abilities, she was gentle and encouraging, and we developed a routine that I practice independently. The routine helps my recurring aches and pains and gives me some mental space. The room is clean, warm and comfortable, and the atmosphere (both in the individual lessons and in the class) was friendly and welcoming. I wish I could fit it into my schedule to go more often.

  • I've been working with Janet for several months now and the experience is transformational. Janet has a true understanding of how the breath works to heal, and has an understanding of yoga as a way of healing the body and spirit. No duality here! Enjoyable, nourishing, supportive, practical. A definite investment in learning of yourself. We need a sixth star.

  • Janet's in-depth knowledge and understanding of the impacts of breath and movement on the human body - and her ability to share these - are phenomenal. I have been a wary, occasional yoga class participant for years due to having scoliosis which has resulted in compromised spinal flexibility. I recently signed up for some one-to-one classes with Janet, as well as attending her group classes. I'd especially recommend one-to-one sessions with Janet to anyone who thinks that their body might be 'different', who is wary of doing particular moves or positions in yoga or is diffident about asking too many questions in a group class. I have found one-to-one sessions with Janet extremely valuable as they have given me confidence to take part in group classes (or yoga on my own) with far more intent.
